Highlights - Exchange of views on climate adaptation with EEA and the Scientific Advisory Board - Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

On 2 June 2026, ENVI Members will hold an exchange of views with the European Environment Agency and the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change on two reports on climate adaptation, published in February 2026. The exchange will provide an opportunity to discuss the impacts of climate change and recommendations for strengthening the EU’s adaptation policy framework. Discussions will focus on the reports "Overheated and underprepared: Europeans' experiences of living with climate change" and "Strengthening resilience to climate change - Recommendations for an effective EU adaptation policy framework". The first report, jointly developed by the European Environment Agency and Eurofound, explores climate-related impacts, resilience actions, perceptions of local measures and concerns about future climate risks. Members will also exchange reflections in view of the future second European Climate Risk Assessment report, expected in the third quarter of 2028, which aims to place climate resilience at the centre of EU decision-making and inform the next EU policy cycle. The exchange of views will also provide an opportunity to discuss the Scientific Advisory Board's recommendations on how the EU can strengthen its adaptation framework in response to escalating and increasingly systemic climate risks. On 1 June 2026, ENVI Members will hold an exchange of views with Commissioners Hadja Lahbib and Jessika Roswall on the Commission Communication on wildfire management. It will provide an opportunity to discuss the Commission’s approach to address the growing risks posed by frequent and severe wildfires across Europe. The debate may focus on the shift from reactive firefighting towards integrated wildfire risk management, with a strong emphasis on prevention, ecosystem resilience and cross-sector coordination between environmental, forestry and civil protection policies. Highlights - Exchange of views with Commissioner Roswall on the Global Biodiversity Framework - Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

On 1 June 2026, ENVI Members will examine whether the EU is on track to meet its biodiversity targets, based on the EU’s 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The discussion comes ahead of COP17 in Yerevan in October 2026, which will serve as the midpoint review of global efforts to meet the 2030 biodiversity targets. Adopted at COP15 in 2022, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework sets out 4 global goals and 23 targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, with a longer-term vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. COP17, taking place in Yerevan from 19 to 30 October 2026, will assess collective progress at the halfway point and identify gaps that may prevent the targets from being met. The Commission's 7th National Report summarises progress under the EU's National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSABs) for 2020-2030, reflected in the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. Members will exchange on how implementation is tracked through EU progress-monitoring tools, as well as on remaining weaknesses, including the Commission's finding that data on non-energy environmentally harmful subsidies remains lacking at EU level. The exchange may also cover other COP17 priorities such as resource mobilisation, biodiversity finance, and governance standards.Source : © European Union, 2026 - EP
